Columbia University located in the heart of New York City, on Manhattan's upper west side, was founded in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of King George II of England. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States. The university boasts an enrollment of over 20,000 students in over a dozen undergraduate and graduate schools, covering the arts and sciences, engineering, medicine, law, business, social work and many other fields. Affiliates include Teachers College, Barnard College and the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

The main campus is in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, centered around a tree-lined extension of West 116th Street known as "College Walk", which runs east-west between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway. The conference venue, Alfred Lerner Hall is found within this beautiful, green gated campus.
